White Plague by Karel Čapek

At its core this play really focused on the dilemma between “good” and “evil” and the different lengths both sides are willing to go to get what they want. I was really struck with the idea of balance, and the way in which the good and the bad are often both necessary. I was inspired by both of these images. The photo to the left shows the visuals I imagined for the show: wild, horizontal lines, high contrast. And the photo below shows the thought behind it: Balance.

Because of that I designed these two moving platforms that mirror each other throughout the show and are used for all of the different locations. At the end of the show one of the characters has their world turned upside down, and I wanted that to be really visceral. And with the furniture in place, it gives the image of a yin yang symbol.
