A Feast in Time of Plague by César Cui

For the Fall 2020 semester, my professor chose plays that were relatable to life at the time. This opera covers a group of elites who are gathering for dinner during the middle of a pandemic. Throughout the show it becomes apparent that these people are more responsible than we thought. The whole opera concerns itself with what it means to stand by and watch horrible things happen. And it brings into question who is worse? Those that intentionally hurt, or those that see hurt and do nothing?

Throughout the show these skull motifs reveal themselves in the form of stained glass, a metaphor for how loosely the death around them is covered.
