An original and a remount
This was a collection of dances from different choreographers here at the school of theatre and dance, which needed varying visuals for the different pieces. Fire in My Mouth, which you see here, involved the story of immigrant women coming to America to work in shirtwaist factories.
The section of the dance that was premiered here was only concerned with the women coming to the city and joining the workforce. Because of that, I really wanted to emphasize the bigness of the city. The perspective units on either side of the stage offers a looming presence and gives the idea that this city is not going to be good news for these women.
Another part of the dance concert was weird scenes from inside the goldmine. This was a remount from a number of years ago, and all that existed from that show was a photo and a very grainy video. From that, the choreographers memory, and my TD’s notes, I was able to re-design the two units you see on stage.
This was a huge challenge because of the need for accuracy, but it taught me so much about drafting and designing more technical elements.
