Making the Moon

Twelfth Night was a bit of a passion project, working as my thesis for my graduate degree. Along with being the scenic designer, I was also working as the Assistant Props Master, and thus had the chance to create the moon that hangs in the center of the space. 

To create the moon, we bought a large paper lantern that's about 4' in diameter. I then primed and painted the surface. The design had a wear-and-tear feel, so I cut a number of holes and scrapes into the lantern and then patched those up with varying materials. After this I created a stencil and painted the moon's face onto the front and back. A light was installed inside once it was hung in the space! I've put here a number of process pictures, along with some production photos!
